August 31-September 11

Welcome to Grade 2!

I am very excited to work alongside you and your child throughout their Grade 2 learning journey! During the month of September, students will be learning and practicing our classroom routines, expectations, and procedures while building a strong and caring classroom community.

We’ve had a wonderful start to our new school year! This week, we focused on getting to know one another and building connections within our classroom community. Together, we shared how each of us learns best and worked on creating an environment where everyone feels heard, valued, and respected.

This is just the beginning of an ongoing journey as we continue to explore our rights and responsibilities as members of our classroom community throughout the year.

 I Promise

After reading the inspiring story I Promise by LeBron James, we were inspired to create our own Class Promise. Students shared their ideas about what matters most to them and what they believe will help make our classroom a positive, safe, and welcoming place for everyone.

Together, we made promises to ourselves, to one another, and to our classroom community. We will continue to revisit these promises throughout the year as we learn, grow, and support one another.

I am looking forward to a wonderful year filled with learning, friendship, kindness, and growth!

Literacy:
-we are reviewing our letters and sounds from Grade 1 in accordance with the CBE Scope and Sequence and its guidelines. This review will help strengthen students’ foundational skills and prepare them for the learning ahead in Grade 2.

Writing:
- we will be focusing on the building blocks of writing. Students will review important writing skills such as what makes a complete sentence, when and where to use a period, capital letters, spacing between words, and how to express their ideas clearly in writing

Art:

-we created our first self-portraits! Students focused on line formation, shapes, proportions, and where to place different features on their portraits. It was wonderful to see their creativity and individuality shine through their artwork!

Math:

-we have started our first Math unit on Patterns. Students will explore, identify, describe, extend, and create different patterns while developing their mathematical thinking. Throughout the year, we will use a variety of learning platforms and resources, including MathUp and JUMP Math, to support students in developing their mathematical understanding and problem-solving skills

Science:

-our first Science unit of study is Matter! Students will begin by exploring the question: What is matter? We will investigate the different properties of matter and explore the world around us through hands-on learning and observation

Community Walks in PE
Starting Wednesday, September 16th, we will be introducing a regular community walk routine as part of our PE classes. These walks will provide students with an opportunity to be active, get outside, and enjoy our school community.
Please ensure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather on walk days. Parents will be notified at least 48 hours in advance whenever a community walk is planned.
If you are interested in volunteering to help with community walks, please note that an updated police clearance is required every year. Our Parent Council Volunteer Coordinator has sent out a Sign-Up Genius for those interested in volunteering.
